Grade 9 Friday

If you missed school today, you missed an important in class assignment and the run down of the final exam.

You need to write a feedback business letter to Mr. Leverton and me about the Tourism/English 9 project you completed on Scaredy Traveller. We talked about how we could write about positive things, what we learned, things we did not like so much, and things that could be improved for next time. Because you missed school today, you need to complete this on your own time. This is your final practice for feedback before the final exam when you write a business letter for me one last time (this semester at least!).

If you do not get this complete by Monday, you are cordially invited to attend the after school late bus library time after school on Tuesday! I will be your host.

Grade 9 synthesis essay help

Here is the youtube clip we watched in class. It will help you to refocus on the four themes we are writing about in this Synthesis Essay.

The FOUR body paragraphs will be written on the 4 key points Ishmael Beah raises: uncertainty, distrust, living outside yourself, and trauma.

Each of the paragraphs will have a topic sentence that will raise a POINT. Each paragraph will have EVIDENCE from each of the books (direct quotes or recollection of part of the story) and an EXPLANATION of that choice of evidence.

Your paragraphs may seem long because you are providing evidence and an explanation from THREE books. This is true. You are in grade 9 and you are able to write longer paragraphs because you have the knowledge necessary to do so.

In your writing, in addition to employing the PEE method to your body paragraphs, please use transition words , stylistic techniques and sentence openers.  These are all LINKS that you should follow to learn more.

Scaredy Traveller Last Days

You are on the home stretch toward completion.

1.  be sure your story follows the narrative formatting and that conflict is moving it forward.

2. make certain that your traveller has dealt with, faced, or conquered at least some of his/her fears

3.  confirm that you have a final page that wraps everything up.

Remember, you can look at the original in class.  Be prepared to present your story to the class on Thursday!

Scaredy Traveller Day 4

Your books are coming together.  Today you received a Day 4 handout that outlined a few more things to add to you book.

Keep in mind that this IS a story, so you need to have a climax and resolution.  This will be the goal starting tomorrow – to ensure that you have story structure to your book.

The teams are working well and I notice that no one is complaining when they see that certain group members are not here.  Regardless, the task must be complete by Thursday.  Deadlines are a reality in the publishing world!

For those of you who would like to see Day 4: Scaredy Traveller day 4

Scaredy Traveller: an adaptation of Melanie Watt’s Scaredy Squirrel

We have successfully completed DAY ONE of the Tourism/English 9 joint project.

All groups have a character name and almost everyone has chosen a destination.  Remember that it is totally acceptable to change the destination for your character to better represent your learning as a grade 9 English student or a Tourism student.

Here is the first handout everyone received today in class: Scaredy Traveller

Welcome back and to the last month of class!

Welcome back!  What a great opportunity for me to remind you of a few things:

1.  There is a late bus on TUESDAYS and THURSDAYS.  I stay after school on these days and will help anyone who stays to complete tasks, learn missed material missed or get the extra support you need to prepare for final exams and demonstrate your knowledge and skill.  Specific people will be receiving personal invitations to stay for reasons those people need to know and no one else does!

2. Our writing goal for all students at PSS this year is to improve vocabulary (use more powerful words to get a point across as well) and use a variety of sentences.  We have been working on using stylistic techniques and sentence starters.  Everyone has these “cheat sheets” in their binders.  You can also find them on our grade pages.

Let’s all work hard together to ensure a good end to the semester!

Grade 9s – you made my holiday!

THANK YOU so much for the great presentations, the great listening skills, the group participation and, especially, for submitting your Independent projects in on time.  We all must be doing something right.

I wish for all of you a good break and that you will come back excited to talk synthesis and war.

If you’re looking for something to do over the holiday, check out Grammar Girl.  You WILL learn something!

Grade 9 2010 finale

Wow.  These have been great presentations.  You have incorporated technology, used drama, shared themes, thought on your feet with the question periods and generally made all of us think about the other book choices that were available before this whole thing started.

On another note, we need some help understanding when you use that and when to use who in sentence.  So, let me introduce you to Grammar Girl. http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/who-versus-that.aspx
