What is Poetry? Let’s check with the pros

We have been exploring “what is poetry” as a big question and have determined:

1. poetry is a lot about imagery

2. poets employ particular literary devices to help create the emotion in their words.

To learn more about what poetry really is, it is good idea to go directly to the pros, the poets themselves.  We would think that they would have the answers.

Individually, we will each explore a specific Canadian poet and create a poetry gallery as a class.  This will help us to understand what others in the field actually think poetry is.

Sections:

1.       This is my poet and this is why he is important in the poetry world or the arts world generally.

2.       These are the types of poems my poet writes (provide examples of poems that he wrote that stand out for you).

3.       These are the literary devices my poet employs most consistently.

4.       This is what my poet thinks poetry is.  This is a great place to add direct quotes from the poet.

5.        Gallery “photo” of the poet.

The first step will be conducting research online and taking notes.  We will NOT get distracted by the vastness of the internet.

Secondly, using the notes, we will create responses for each of the sections.  Written responses are welcome, as are video.  You can use apps like Aurasma to create your project.  Because the goal is to create a gallery, live oral presentations are not an option this time around.

The first website we will all go to is http://poets.ca/members_data/glossary/. This site will guarentee some information an a plethora of Canadian Poets.  It is always good to go to a reliable website to begin your research.

You will be graded using the BC Performance Standards.  These include Reading for Information and Writing to Communicate Ideas.
